Sustainability Plan

• Our teams goal is to cut back on waste throughout the hotel, including water conservation, electrical conservation, and recycling, while creating an awareness for our guests and associates that they can take home with them.

• We feel it is our social responsibility as leaders in the Fayetteville business and hospitality community to set an example and do what we can to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint. Our plan is a working one and will be updated and revised often. We welcome your feed back and will entertain any suggestions that come our way.

• An on-site Green Team has been established at the property and consists of a representative in each department. If you have specific questions that this document fails to answer please do not hesitate ask for a member of our Green Team and we will do our best to answer your questions or address your concerns.


Marriott as a Brand:

• By conserving energy, our hotels around the world are on track to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1 million tons over 10 years – 2000-2010. That’s equivalent to taking 140,000 cars off the road.

• Marriott received the 2007 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for three years of outstanding performance and has earned more ENERGY STAR labels than any other hotel company.

• Marriott has reduced out hot water usage by 10% by replacing 400,000 shower heads.

• Marriott ahs decreased our energy use and saved 65% on our hotel lighting cost by replacing 450,000 light bulbs with florescent lighting in 2006.

• Marriott has started a company-wide initiative; Marriott’s Spirit to Preserve. This provides guests the opportunity to make a donation offsetting the carbon footprint left from their stay with us. You can visit the website at http://www.marriott.com/green-brazilian-rainforest.mi.

Green Recognition:

• The Courtyard by Marriott has been recognized as one of Northwest Arkansas’ Greenest Offices by the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal.

• We have been approved by a new website highlighting sustainable lodging (http://www.istaygreen.org/) and are currently the only hotel rated in the Fayetteville area.

• The hotel is a member of the Green Valley Network.

• The General Manager of the hotel is also the company wide Sustainability Coordinator for our hotel management company – Vista Host.

• Our General Manager also serves on the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce’s GreeNWAy Committee.


All Departments:

• All departments recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum produced from their respective departments. Recyclables are collected on a weekly basis and transported to the recycling center.

• All departments turn off, or dim, any unnecessary lighting whenever possible.

• All departments unplug any unused equipment at the end of the day or shift.

• Energy efficient bulbs have been installed in all compatible light fixtures.

• The hotel is 100% non-smoking.

• The hotel is a pet free property.

• The hotel partners with as many “green friendly” vendors as possible while maintaining Marriott Brand standards.


Front Desk:

• All ink cartridges are recycled.

• Front desk conducts paperless registration at check-in.

• Gas fireplace is on only by guest request or during winter months.


Administration:

• All office equipment is on energy saver mode and unused equipment is shut down at the end of each work day to conserve energy.

• Paperless communication is encouraged.


Housekeeping:

• The housekeeping department’s primary responsibility is managing our guest rooms’ waste.

• Shutdown procedures are in place – at the beginning of each day a list of newly vacated rooms is obtained and each room will be entered. All lights, televisions and other unused electrical items left on from the guest are turned off and/or unplugged. At the end of the day, only those rooms that are pre-assigned should have lights on; all others should be turned off.

• Trash can liners are not used in guest rooms.

• Guestroom thermostats will be regulated and set at a standard of 68 degrees and set on auto heat in the winter and 73 degrees at auto cool in the summer.

• Linen and terry re-use programs are in place and strictly adhered to.

• Only full loads of linens are run to conserve water.

• All lights are turned off, computers shut down and power strips off in heart of the house and storage areas at the close of each day.

• Low flow shower heads have been installed and are used in guest rooms.


Kitchen/Restaurant & Bar:

• Only full loads of dishes are run as to conserve water.

• All lights and equipment are turned off and/or unplugged at the close of day.

• Sinks are not filled with water until needed and are only filled once a day (when possible).


Maintenance:

• All public area thermostats are set and regulated to mirror one another following the same guidelines as the guest rooms.

• All public area lights and storage lights are dimmed or off at close of day.

• All exterior lighting is set on a photocell and is adjusted seasonally.

• AC filters are replaced monthly and marked as they are installed for tracking.

• All energy efficient equipment is checked and any issues are corrected on a quarterly or monthly basis.

• All large appliances and batteries are recycled upon replacement.

• A rain sensor has been installed to the irrigation system for water conservation.

• Spa has a timer for the jets providing an auto shut off after guest use.

• All air intake and supply grills remain unobstructed to maximize energy usage.


Our Guests:

• Our guests will have the opportunity to do their part by recycling via public area recycling containers for paper, plastic and aluminum.

• A letter communicating our green initiatives has been drafted, laminated and placed in all guest rooms informing them of our efforts and asking them to contribute while staying with us and at home.
